Last year's emergence of Jason Snelling as a decent alternative makes the idea more realistic, but the Falcons made similar predictions about Turner entering the 2009 season. Turner went on to average 19.5 carries per game in the first eight weeks -- good for a 312-carry pace over 16 games -- before injuries struck. Assuming good health, a similar pace is likely for 2010.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>"Fitness will not be an issue," according to beat reporter D. Orlando Ledbetter. The Falcons acknowledged that Turner was out of shape early last season, resulting in a low yards-per-carry average to begin the year. He was just rounding into shape when he suffered an ultimately season-ending high right ankle sprain in the ninth game. Turner should bounce back big this year.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Turner is in shape and highly motivated to prove that he isn't a one-year wonder. "When you start talking about 400 carries, that's probably too much," Smith said. "But we definitely want to see Michael getting the big share of the carries. That's what works for him." We're conservatively projecting 303 carries for Turner this season.

Michael Turner - RB - Falcons Coach Mike Smith has noticed that Michael Turner's speed has improved this year after reporting in much better shape.
"I think he's running with more confidence [too]," said Smith. "He's a big part of what we want to be able to do in the regular season." Though the Falcons put in a lot of work on the no-huddle offense during the offseason, Turner confirms that the offense's motto is still "power football." September 7 - 5:15 p.m. ET

Turner's injury was never thought to be serious, but we'll feel more confident about his Week 3 status if he practices in full Wednesday. When 100 percent, Turner is not in danger of losing more than 6-10 touches per game to Jason Snelling, despite Snelling's breakout Week 2 game. Snelling will become the full-time third-down back. Jerious Norwood (knee) is out indefinitely.

Coach Mike Smith wasn't just being optimistic when he expressed no concern for Turner's status after he was pulled in a Week 2 blowout. Turner will start against the Saints, and there's no reason to believe his workload will be altered significantly. He's a low-end RB1 this week.
